Haapavesi, my home town
|
History of Haapavesi
There was some settlement in prehistoric time in Haapavesi, but the real settlement started in 15th century. In the bronze age Laplanders inhabited Haapavesi region. Many places here are named in Lappish style. People from other parts of Finland robbed Haapavesi and gather food from Pyhäjoki valley. Some people were fascinated by this valley and stayed here. Anyway the truth is that the population in Ostrobotnia was sparse. In 17th century the great famine destroyed large part of population in Pyhäjoki valley. Nowadays there are about 8000 inhabitants in Haapavesi. Most people live in small villages ( Vattukylä, Vatjusjärvi, Kytökylä, Humaloja, Mieluskylä, Karsikas, Aittokylä and Lehonsaari) around the centre of the town.
